Board hears bond program progress; bids for elementary projects to go out this fall
Summary
Business services and bond consultants reported construction progress across elementary and secondary schools, listed upcoming bid packages and named contractors and consultants involved in the final phase of the 2020 bond program.
Business services staff and bond consultants gave trustees an update on progress and next steps for the final phase of Birmingham Public Schools’ 2020 bond program on Sept. 16, including summer work completions and bid documents scheduled for release this fall.
Mister Teratuda (Business Services) introduced David Goldman of Plante Moran, who presented the program dashboard and a schedule for upcoming projects. Goldman reported that construction at Bingham Farms remains active and that the district has closed out several summer projects, including new finishes, casework and site improvements.
Goldman said bid documents will go out “tomorrow” for a set of elementary projects: Beverly, Greenfield, Harlan and Pembroke, plus Derby (for bleacher replacement). He described planned scope items: restroom renovations, mechanical upgrades, new flooring and casework, office renovations, selective roof replacements and parking-lot and bus-loop work at several campuses.
Goldman listed the program team and partners by name: architects GMB and IDS; construction managers Rockford Construction and Barton Malow; and consultants Structure Tech, ChemTech, Arc Environmental and MTC. He also said the district will present the November bid pack and a December dashboard with recommendations for the 2026 roof-replacement program, followed by a March report on furniture replacements.
Specific sites and scope mentioned in the presentation included: - Bingham Farms: addition in back, brick facade, interior finishes, enclosed addition targeted before winter; new furniture delivered this summer with renovation work ongoing. - Quarton: selected classroom millwork, media-center and corridor finishes, new main-office renovation. - Groves: gym floor replacement after water intrusion, weight-room modifications and new parking lot. - Seaholm and Pembroke: parking-lot improvements; Pembroke to receive two new bus loops and parking-lot resurfacing. - Derby: planned bleacher replacements; Derby and other sites have targeted roofing work.
Goldman said roof-replacement work is being scheduled for summer 2026 at Derby, Pierce, Quarton and West Maple after a districtwide roof assessment identified the highest-need areas. He said the project team is hopeful some alternates will be accepted if bids come in under budget.
Discussion versus decision: The presentation was informational; trustees did not vote on construction contracts during the open meeting. Trustees were invited to a Bingham Farms tour in October.
