Police and fire chiefs seek authority to surplus and sell seized and decommissioned equipment

Police and fire department chiefs presented a list of seized vehicles and retired equipment for surplus disposal and auction; proceeds must be returned to the purchasing fund when required and many items will be sold through Compass Options.
Chief Seiler and Chief Seymour presented Resolution 25-1843 asking the commission to approve disposal of vehicles and other equipment no longer needed by the police and fire departments. Chief Seiler said the police list includes vehicles seized through arrests and DUIs as well as older fleet cars that have been replaced. He noted that sale proceeds may need to be credited back to specific purchase funds when the items were originally purchased.
Chief Seymour said the fire department has retired equipment that needs to be cleared from station inventory; some items are unusable and will be discarded while most will be declared surplus and sold. He said the city uses Compass Options to auction surplus equipment and that, in many cases, surplus fire equipment is sold internationally.
No formal vote was recorded in the work session; the disposals were presented for action on the regular meeting agenda.
