Director Carey told commissioners the city implemented paid parental leave on July 1 with the budget and added the benefit to the employee handbook, but the Internal Revenue Service requires a formal written policy, so staff are bringing Resolution 25-1842 to formalize the policy.
Carey said the benefit provides “up to 2 weeks,” or 80 hours, of paid leave for a mother or father and can apply in several circumstances where an employee assumes responsibility for a child. She said the 80 hours may be used within the first 12 months of a child’s birth or placement.
Commissioners praised the policy as a straightforward addition to employee benefits. The adoption was presented for action on the regular meeting agenda; no formal vote was recorded during the work session.
