County accepts $517,337 in Jewel settlement funds to bolster public-health enforcement, hire educator

Gretchen Newden, deputy commissioner of health, told the committee the county received the first three years of its allocation from the New York State Attorney General’s 2023 Jewel settlement and requested acceptance and appropriation of $517,337.16 for years one through three (period listed on the request: Oct. 15, 2025–Oct. 20, 2030).
Newden said the full Orange County allocation from the settlement is about $1.3 million but, because of distribution delays, the county received three years up front rather than staggered payments. The department said the funds will be used for enforcement efforts and to hire a public-health educator.
A motion to accept and appropriate the funds was made and carried on a voice vote recorded as “Aye” with no opposition.
The committee did not expand on specific hiring timelines during the meeting; staff indicated the department and finance had discussed the allocation before the meeting and that the funds had been received by the finance department.
