Commission approves small neon bracket sign for Art of Play on Atlantic Avenue

The Landmark Preservation Commission on Sept. 16 approved installation of a small neon bracket sign for Art of Play at 69 Atlantic Avenue in the Brooklyn Heights Historic District.
Applicant representative Adam Rubin said the proposed sign is 17 by 18 inches, projects 14 inches from the building, and will include a 12‑inch casing to house electronics. "We hope to continue that grand tradition," Rubin said of historic neon signage in the Heights, citing nearby neon examples such as Montero and the Long Island Bar.
Public testimony was supportive. Judy Stanton, representing the Brooklyn Heights Association, told the commission the group "supports this application" and said the sign would be harmonious with existing neon on Atlantic Avenue. Christina Conroy of the Victorian Society of New York also supported the application, calling the sign "well scaled for this small storefront" and noting historic precedent for neon in the neighborhood.
Commissioners found the proposal modest and appropriate; the motion to approve passed 8–0. Brooklyn Community Board 2 also recommended approval in its advisory report.
Staff noted that the sign is real glass neon and that the installation would not damage or conceal significant historic material. The approval finds a historic precedent for projecting neon signs in commercial storefronts within Brooklyn Heights and concludes the proposed bracket will not detract from the building or district.
