Miss Kelly Barnes (staff member) presented event requests: the Clara Brett benefit poker run and chili cook-off requested by the Red Knights Motorcycle Club for Sept. 20 at Old Souls Trading Company with a partial street blockage, and the Festival of Lights tree-lighting requested by Hope for Women on Dec. 1 at the Courthouse Square with no blockages; staff said police, fire and street departments approved both events and the council voted to grant the permits.
Lieutenant (presenting for police) reported that two retail businesses met state and city requirements and the police department had no objections: 5 Points Food Mart at 3022 Highway 195 and Star Food Mart at 1275 Highway 78 West. The council held the public hearings, had no public speakers, and approved the retail beer and wine licenses for off-premises consumption.
Jessica Cook (staff member) reported on two contracts: Tires, Tubes and Services had two responses and she recommended awarding to Southern Tire Mart as the lowest responsible bidder; the inmate-food contract received a single bid from Sun's Supermarket and she recommended awarding to them. The council moved and approved both contract awards.
Why it matters: The approvals allow the events to proceed, expand permitted alcohol retail for off-premises consumption at two locations, and put municipal service contracts in place for fleet tires and jail food supplies.
