Superintendent Robbins proposes reboot of strategic plan, urging renewed focus on high‑quality learning and workforce pathways

Superintendent Rick Robbins asked the board on Sept. 16 to revisit and “reboot” the district’s strategic plan to reflect changes since the plan’s creation, including post‑pandemic learning shifts, workforce demands and the growing population of multilingual and economically disadvantaged students.

Robbins highlighted the district’s strong outcomes — an above‑state average ACT composite ranking and more than $50 million in scholarship offers to seniors — but said the sophistication of today’s workforce expectations and rapid technology changes justify a focused review of strategic indicators and priorities.

Robbins suggested the board reconvene a roundtable to prioritize a smaller set of measurable goals, such as improving early‑grade literacy, reducing chronic absenteeism and expanding CTE (Career and Technical Education) pathways that research shows correlate with very high graduation rates for participating students. “If they engage in these pathways, it’s almost certain, graduation,” Robbins said, summarizing district data on CTE concentrators and completers.

Board members agreed a reboot was timely and emphasized that “high‑quality learning” should remain the central organizing principle. Board member Amanda Oakes urged that the district emphasize a joy of learning and hands‑on experiences while also addressing technology, artificial intelligence and student well‑being.
