Resident urges safety improvements on Kirk Road near St. Charles schools

KANE COUNTY, Ill. — During public comment Sept. 16, Steve Leffler of St. Charles told the Transportation Committee the stretch of Kirk Road near Redwing Middle School and St. Charles East High School is unsafe for student pedestrians and is not included in the county's five‑year plan.
"We do not have this stretch road in our 5 year plan, and it should have been included," Leffler said. He told the committee roughly 4,000 students attend the two schools, with many living across Kirk Road. "The shoulders are too thin... a 2 lane, what was a country road, and is now a heavily traveled road that's a county road and a truck route," he said, adding that gravel trucks and speed limits of 40–45 mph contribute to hazards.
Leffler asked that the county lower the speed limit to 30–35 mph along the stretch, add pedestrian routes (especially on the east side), and consider a redesign or other safety improvements before an incident occurs. He said enforcement is limited and current conditions make it difficult for police to safely stop vehicles on the shoulders.
The comment was made during the public comment portion of the meeting; committee members did not take an immediate action at the meeting but staff and members acknowledged the safety concern and the need to consider options.
