Student journalists press for adviser authority; board tables library selection policy

Student journalists and advisers from Pine View High School and other district schools asked the Sarasota County School Board on Sept. 16 to revise district policy so that journalism advisers — rather than site administrators — would hold initial editorial approval over student publications.
Students described administrative sign‑off on dozens of school publications as a bottleneck that adds deadlines and limits coverage. “Our revised policy would make the journalism adviser of the class responsible for all content published, thus emphasizing the role as adviser and taking away unnecessary pressure off the administration,” said Ava Leonard, editor in chief of Pine View’s The Torch, during public comment. Student speakers also noted award recognition for the district’s publications and said clearer adviser authority would protect students’ ability to report on topics of substance.
The board separately heard extensive public comment about the proposed library, media center management and challenge process (policy 4.22). A community speaker, Robin Pickett, urged the board to vote no on the draft, saying it contained “significant errors and inconsistencies” and called for tabling the policy to correct references and internal contradictions. The board tabled policy 4.22 and approved policy 4.72 (participation of home‑education and private‑school students in extracurriculars) at the same time.
