Sarasota school board approves moving Oct., Nov. and Dec. meetings to 10 a.m., drawing public protest

School Board Member Robin Marinelli, School Board Member Bridget Ziegler and School Board Member Karen Rose voted in favor; School Board Member Liz Barker and School Board Member Tom Edwards voted against the change.
Supporters of the earlier start argued it would reduce safety risks for board members leaving late evening meetings and make scheduling easier for the board. Opponents said the move would effectively bar many working parents, staff and in‑school students from attending and speaking at public meetings.
The issue drew repeated public comment over the meeting’s public‑comment periods. “Do you know who you serve? Do you, the Sarasota County School Board, know who you serve?” asked Lucas Carpenter, a 17‑year‑old senior at Suncoast Polytechnic High School during public comment, arguing that moving meetings to daytime would silence students and working parents. Other speakers, including retired first responder John Coughlin and substitute teacher Tom Dessein, said safety concerns and threats outside the chamber made an earlier start reasonable.
Board members debated the amendment that extended the single October change to two additional meetings; the amended motion passed on a 3‑2 voice vote. The board’s staff earlier explained that a private meeting on Oct. 21 had been requested under Florida law to discuss settlement negotiations (agenda item 11.12), which some board members and staff said influenced scheduling needs.
Board members who supported the change emphasized that public comment options remain available in other formats, including online submissions and town halls, and said the daytime meeting is similar to schedules used by other local public bodies. Those opposed urged preserving evening meetings so working parents, teachers and students can attend. Several students said they come after school and asked the board to rethink the schedule.
The board chair noted the change applies only to the three listed meetings and that the board will formally set future meeting dates and times at its November reorganization. The motion to change the times carried with Marinelli, Ziegler and Rose voting yes; Barker and Edwards voting no.
