Staff summarized the August crash report and previewed forthcoming Vision Zero implementation materials and two operational pilots to support quick-build safety projects.
Katie (staff) and others said August recorded no fatalities but several serious-injury crashes involving motorized vehicles; five bicycle-involved incidents and two pedestrian incidents were listed in the table. Staff noted a summer lull in crashes had ended and totals returned to normal seasonal levels.
Staff also described the Vision Zero safety action plan due at year-end; the plan will include a public-facing dashboard with crash maps and filters to explore patterns by time of day, mode and other variables. "One thing in particular that I think a lot of people are really gonna enjoy is the Vision 0 dashboard," a staff presenter said.
The department also announced plans to deploy near-miss camera technology at several intersections to collect 3-D movement data and measure close passes and near misses (events that do not register as crashes in police reports). The cameras use embedded AI classification to distinguish road users and classify near misses; staff said the technology will add a second indicator beyond crash reports to identify dangerous locations and support quick-build interventions.
Commissioners encouraged quick-build pilot projects and asked staff to coordinate with operations teams for installation and monitoring. Staff said a safety action plan work session is planned for February with subsequent mayor/commission agenda items in March.
