At the Sept. 16 South Colonie Central School District Board of Education meeting, district facilities staff reported progress on summer construction projects across the district, including renovations at the high school, the auditorium, and phased classroom upgrades at multiple elementary schools.
Facilities staff said the high school F Wing (English and social studies) still had about three classrooms awaiting window framing and door-swipe lock work; officials expected those rooms to return to regular use later in the week and central air to be online within about a month. Locker-room renovations and team-room improvements are complete and in use; other locker-room retrofit work is ongoing.
The high-school auditorium, officials said, is approximately 99% complete: seats and carpeting are installed, and the soundboard was fitted this week. Training on auditorium systems is underway for staff and is scheduled again for the district staff conference day on Oct. 20. The district plans to make the facility available for student activities later in September and to host an open house to show the community improvements.
At Leishukill (transcript spelling varies), staff reported phased exterior-window and HVAC upgrades. The district said it is renovating six classrooms at a time and expects the first six to be ready by around Oct. 10 (Columbus Day), with a goal that all front-facing classrooms toward the tennis-court side be complete by November. Work includes new windows, window framing, and central-air upgrades. In-class relocations use library space and neighboring classrooms while contractors work on second shift to minimize daytime disruption.
Shaker Road classrooms are in use; staff described model classrooms with modern furniture, built-in cubbies and updated technology that will inform future renovations at schools such as Saddlewood. Contractors and district staff coordinated to preserve classroom readiness for the start of school despite supply delays and unfinished work over the summer.
Officials said additional projects — restroom upgrades near the auditorium and a renovated nurses’ suite — are expected to finish late this fall. The district announced it will schedule public open-house dates once rooms are ready; one date mentioned for Leishukill-style events is Oct. 29. Staff thanked contractors for prioritizing safety and timely completion while students were in session.
The facilities report was accepted as part of the board’s routine reports and recommendations approved 9 to 0 on a motion by Ms. Gabriello and second by Mr. Larabee.
