The Abington High School student representative told the Abington School Board on Sept. 17 that orientation and early-season activities show strong student engagement and that multiple fall teams are unbeaten.
The student representative said the transition team held new-student orientation on Aug. 13, noting that “almost the entire class attempted to get acclimated to the high school” and that the class of 2029 is “off to a successful start to the school year.” Parents attended Back-to-School Night on Sept. 11, and conferences are scheduled for Oct. 6.
Student activities also expanded: the board heard that the school held its first activity period allowing students to choose from more than 30 clubs to “find like minded peers” and increase community engagement. The student representative thanked club advisers and administrators for creating the time.
Athletics highlights were a central part of the report. The football team remained unbeaten after a 45-7 win over Valley View; the report noted that senior quarterback Nick Bradley “became just the fourteenth quarterback in [school] history to surpass 5,000 career passing yards” and senior wide receiver Gavin Airedenders surpassed 1,200 career receiving yards. Senior day for football, cheer and band is scheduled for Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. when Abington hosts North Pocono.
Other fall-season results presented to the board included: field hockey wins and close losses; both boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams sweeping several local meets; the girls volleyball team remaining unbeaten and ranked No. 2 in District 2 AAA; girls tennis remaining unbeaten with a 5-0 win over Jersey Shore and a second-place finish at the Altoona Invitational; girls golf remaining undefeated with four individuals qualifying for pre-districts; boys golf qualifying seven individuals at pre-districts; girls soccer remaining unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in District 2 AAA; and the boys soccer team at 7-0 and ranked No. 1 in District 2 AAA.
The student representative closed with thanks to staff, club advisers and the community and said, “Those are all my notes for this evening, and I hope you all have a fantastic night.”
The report was informational; no board action was taken on the student-report items at the meeting.
