Parents and students urge preschool space and fund Scholastic Bowl; board approves co-op funding on consent agenda

Parents and students used the public-comment period to press the Board of Education on two topics: the need for a larger Early Learning and Development Center (ELDC) building and funding for middle-school Scholastic Bowl teams. The board later approved co-op Scholastic Bowl funding for the district's teams as part of the consent agenda.

Kaylee Norris, an eighth-grade student at Honey Middle School, told the board she went to ELDC as a preschooler and described crowding and inadequate practice and music spaces. She said the auditorium doubles as a choir classroom and that hallways and passing periods are cramped; she asked the board to "please take this long consideration." Later, Catherine Norris, a parent and lifelong community member, told the board she was frustrated that a larger ELDC building had not been delivered despite prior referenda. She urged the board to make a direct decision instead of deferring the choice to a future referendum, saying a referendum could add costs and delays; she cited inflation and an example that Mitchell Elementary had cost more than $30 million.

During public comment, Sydney Nault (self-identified as an eighth-grade student at Huntley Middle School and Scholastic Bowl captain) asked the board to fund the joint Scholastic Bowl team's trip to the state competition. She said the program has "really excellent chances of advancing" and that lack of funds prevented the team from attending last year.

The co-op Scholastic Bowl funding for the CRMS and HMRS teams was included in the consent agenda (items 5b through 5h). The board approved the consent agenda by motion and roll-call vote; the meeting record shows the consent package included approval of payroll, accounts payable, financial reports and co-op Scholastic Bowl funding. The consent motion passed without separate public deliberation of the funding item, and the consent roll call recorded multiple "yes" votes.
