Board hears BOCES updates, substitute-training opportunities, and facilities progress
Summary
Board members reported BOCES grant balances and substitute-teacher training dates, and facilities staff updated the board on the generator project, gym-floor refinishing and vehicle-barrier installations.
During committee reports at the September meeting the board received updates on BOCES funding and substitute-teacher training, and on district facilities projects.
A board member who attended a recent BOCES meeting said DuBois has more than $40,000 banked through BOCES for local use, and that the district applied for and received a $10,000 grant and a separate $20,000 grant that will be used in the school's science department. The board member said the district is one of the second schools to apply for the latter grant and that a local committee is determining distribution. (The board indicated the $20,000 grant would be used for science but staff would finalize allocations.)
BOCES substitute-teacher classes were described as available at $150 per registrant; prerequisites listed in meeting remarks were a high-school diploma or GED and minimum age 21. The course lasts three days with a final exam; the presenter said an observation requirement (approximately 30 hours) is required to complete qualification, though the exact number of observation hours was stated as an estimate.
Facilities updates reported that the district is nearing completion on a generator project but is waiting for the contractor to schedule a start-up test. The gym floor has been refinished and insurance walk-throughs have been completed. The board discussed installing vehicle barriers in front of district buildings; some barriers are already installed near the gym entrance.
No formal board action was taken on these operational items during the meeting; they were presented as committee reports and status updates.
