District outlines $25,000 CTE grant, graduation-profile work and redesign of high-school intervention period
Summary
Principal Garcia and the superintendent described a $25,000 CTE grant to develop course and program work tied to a 'profile of a graduate,' broaden internships and revise the high-school intervention/enrichment period (formerly Ram Time); officials also discussed state athletics reclassification talks and embargoed YTAP results.
District leaders briefed the board on a Career and Technical Education (CTE) grant and plans to revise the high-school intervention/enrichment period during the September meeting.
Principal Garcia said the district received a $25,000 CTE grant to help align high school coursework and programs with a "profile of a graduate," including internships and postsecondary preparation. Garcia described a four-person team — including Lydia Hoy — working on course development, program development and an updated intervention/enrichment block during the school day.
Garcia said the district is refining a 25-minute period before lunch currently used for intervention and enrichment, seeking a more consistent rotation and student-centered programming. She said the team is attempting a data-driven approach, using formative assessment and state testing to identify remediation needs while also adding opportunities for students who do not require remediation. Garcia said the district hopes the redesign will become meaningful for students academically and for workplace skills; she noted some elements are "building the plane in flight."
Separately, Doctor Walters told the board there are statewide discussions about recalibration and reclassification of high school athletics (moving schools between 1A, 2A, 3A classifications); she said it is a developing conversation and that the district does not yet see a direct impact. Walters said the district had been recognized by the state superintendent for substantial growth over the prior year.
Board members asked about the YTAP (state testing) results that had been received by the district but were under embargo; Doctor Walters said the district must wait for the public release and expected to be able to share results by the next board meeting in mid-September.
