County expands CARES UP funding for first‑responder family wellness events and peer support referrals

The committee approved additional funding from the New York State Office of Mental Health CARES UP grant program to support family‑inclusive health and wellness events and activities for existing CARES UP participants. Each division (fire, police and 911) presented supplemental awards of $3,000 to support venue, food and family activities, with the goal of promoting social connections and resiliency among first responders and their families.
Reviewing the county peer support program that is part of the CARES UP effort, staff said the peer support coordinator has already handled over 100 peer support referrals year‑to‑date, providing direct assistance or referrals for higher care. Presenters described recent peer support activity, including assistance to a local fire department after a line‑of‑duty death and support for personnel involved in response and CPR attempts.
Committee members commended the outreach and grant‑seeking work and approved the supplemental CARES UP awards by voice vote.
