County awarded $50,000 for explosive swipe detection and drone‑detection at air show

The committee approved acceptance of a $50,000 Critical Infrastructure grant, funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security through New York State, to purchase a trace explosive detection swipe system and unmanned aircraft system (UAS) detection and tracking sensors. The county partnered with the Orange County Sheriff's Office as a subrecipient for the award.
Presenters said the trace swipe system offers a handheld capability similar to airport chemical swipes to analyze suspicious packages and alert on explosive residues; the equipment is intended to supplement canine teams when canines are unavailable or need relief. The UAS detection sensors were described as a two‑sensor system to detect drones that do not broadcast authorized Remote ID and to alert law enforcement during the air show and other events. Staff said the equipment can be used year‑round beyond the air show and will likely be housed with the sheriff’s office.
The grant was presented as a competitive opportunity that allowed purchase of equipment not permitted under other state counterterrorism grants. The committee approved the award by voice vote.
