County highlights rural branding, housing assessment and community developer work

Sarah, Johnson County's economic development coordinator, briefed the Board of Supervisors on Sept. 17 about a year of rural economic work aimed at promoting downtown revitalization, agricultural tourism and local housing development. "Our goal is to position the unincorporated Johnson County and each rural community as a distinct cultural experience," she said, summarizing branding grants awarded to communities including Swisher and Lone Tree.

Sarah described a county‑funded rural housing assessment under way to evaluate non‑metro housing needs and identify development opportunities, and a planned community developers initiative being designed with university planning students to help local residents pursue small‑scale development. She also summarized a speaker series and workshops that featured rural housing experts and local entrepreneurs, and noted collaborations on grocery access, farm tours and downtown events.

Supervisors praised grassroots work and relationship building while urging patience on measurement: "Economic development is probably better measured over decades," one supervisor said. Sarah said the county is also working with University of Iowa researchers to review successful models elsewhere and planned to start that research in mid‑September.

The briefing did not request board action. County staff said the rural housing assessment and developer training project will return for further decisions as they finalize curricula and funding approaches.
