Health department urges event organizers to comply with temporary-food rules; reports multiple abatement cases

Clinton County—s health department told commissioners Sept. 16 that organizers of community events must contact the health department about temporary food service under state code and that the department is actively pursuing abatements on several homes with trash and other health hazards.
Melissa, speaking for the health department, said the county is working to comply with an Indiana statute cited in the meeting as "Indiana code 4 10 7 dash 24" concerning temporary food events. She said the department is asking event organizers to notify health staff so officials can trace potential foodborne outbreaks and maintain public safety.
Melissa noted limited exemptions for certain tax-exempt nonprofits for events of limited duration and limited menus, but said most public festivals and fairs require coordination with the health department. She also reported multiple properties currently under abatement and remediation for trash and health hazards and said the department is coordinating with area planning, local towns and protective services where needed.
No enforcement action beyond ongoing abatements was taken at the Sept. 16 meeting; the health department asked organizers to reach out proactively to staff before events and said it would bring additional steps on abatements to the board as they proceed.
