Resident urges fix to broken pedestrian crossing button; staff to check maintenance arrangement with Lake County

A Highwood resident told the City Council on Sept. 16 that a pedestrian crossing button on Washington Avenue near the gas station has not been working despite multiple requests. The resident said she has filed three online requests and asked the council for a more visible/beeping button like those used in neighboring towns. The resident, who identified herself in public comment, said she worried about people with strollers and children and described instances where drivers became impatient at the crossing. City staff responded that they would check the city’s request tracker and confirm whether repairs have been logged. Staff also said the city has an agreement with Lake County for maintenance of some crossings and that the county would be called to fix the device if it is the county’s responsibility. Councilmembers encouraged the resident to continue using the city’s report-a-thing request tracker or to contact an individual councilmember directly if the problem persists. Staff said they would follow up and verify whether the crossing hardware is functioning or needs replacement.
