IU reports enrollment growth; three resource officers assigned to learning center

A representative of the regional Intermediate Unit (IU) told the Great Valley School Board that the IU's student and staff population has grown by roughly one‑third compared with 2019, driven in part by new or expanded facilities and online programs.
The IU representative said a new building in Avon Grove has opened; the Avon Grove site will house about 72 students in one program and is expected to have capacity for 173 children in early Head Start when at full enrollment. The IU's BBA online program currently enrolls about 2,600 students, and the IU has expanded world‑language offerings to include Arabic and American Sign Language in partnership with other regional IUs.
The IU representative also reported a new partnership with the Chester County Sheriff's Department to place three resource officers at the IU learning center that serves students with the highest needs. “They are seeing these three positions as a way to both keep the students and staff safe, but also keep a feeling and a climate in the building that is kind of great for everybody there,” the IU representative said.
The report noted several staffing challenges remain; the IU said it has never been fully staffed historically and that recruitment and staffing remain ongoing concerns. The representative also mentioned state‑level budget uncertainty and possible changes in technical education funding as items that could affect the IU in the 2026–27 school year.
No formal board action was requested on these IU updates at the meeting.
