The board approved the motion by voice vote.
Board discussion described the project as the first phase of a multi-phase upgrade. A member explained the current 500 kW generator can only power selected systems and that installing a 1,250 kW generator would allow the high school to operate as a "full service shelter," powering bathrooms, kitchen equipment and other building systems during prolonged outages. The member said additional electrical work and new switch gear would be required in later phases to power the entire building and that the town would seek roughly $500,000 more to complete later phases.
The board and staff noted the project has been on the books for several years, was impacted by inflation and supply-chain delays, and that state funding timelines can be long; board members referenced an earlier $2,000,000 grant award process from 2021. The motion authorized purchase and contract execution for the generator; funding to complete subsequent phases has been described as pending and under pursuit by town staff.
