Wasatch Junior High tech coach describes daily role ahead of IT Professionals Day

Becca Beecher, the library tech coach at Wasatch Junior High, described running the school library and supporting classroom technology during a brief interview with Superintendent Horsey ahead of IT Professionals Day. "I get to run the library and help with that side of things. But then I also get to help with the technology at the school," Beecher said.

Beecher said her work includes coaching teachers on how to integrate technology into lessons, troubleshooting devices and choosing tools that increase engagement without distracting students. "I think there's definitely a balance in it and knowing what's right for your class," she said, adding that secondary classes require different approaches from lower grades.

Beecher recommended specific classroom tools to raise student participation, including Padlet for written sharing and "digital breakouts." "I love doing digital breakouts. I think they're super fun because then that gets them talking within the group," she said, noting that digital activities can also let shy students contribute via writing or messaging. She also described library activities such as Lego displays and themed reading programs as ways to blend creativity and literacy.

On a personal note, Beecher said she reads to stay current with students' interests: "I'm reading The Keeper of the Lost series," she said. The interview closed with Superintendent Horsey thanking the district's IT staff: "a huge shout out to all of our IT professionals in Granite School District and our tech coaches who help, improve instruction through the use of quality engagement with technology."
