Commission staff and commissioners reviewed summer outreach activities on Sept. 11, reporting notable public engagement at the Sustainable Sammamish farmers market and the first HOA presentation to Kalahani. Swan told the commission the Aug. 6 farmers market was “a screaming success,” and commissioners reported roughly 235 visitors stopped by the commission’s booth; staff distributed about 79 scavenger-hunt handouts and received 57 completed returns.
Commissioners described activities at multiple booths, youth giveaways, and partner participation: King County Metro issued roughly 40 youth ORCA cards at an adjoining booth. Swan said the booth’s scavenger-hunt format, a “sustainability wheel,” and tree-kit giveaways attracted families and teens and produced follow-up interest in city programs. Commissioners said many conversations focused on transportation and water conservation.
The commission also reported its first in-person HOA presentation to Kalahani (identified in outreach research as the largest HOA by households). Presenters introduced the Sustainability Commission, the city’s climate action plan and actionable steps residents can take—weatherization, heat pumps and transportation alternatives. Participants asked follow-up questions; staff and commissioners saw HOA outreach as a repeating engagement opportunity. Swan said the city now has a polished slide deck for HOA presentations and that a short one-page summary (for digital and print distribution) will be prepared for commissioners to share in neighborhood groups, school PTAs and HOAs.
Commissioners agreed to continue outreach at events and to coordinate with Sustainability Ambassadors and school/PTA channels. Staff asked commissioners to help distribute one-pagers and social content and to staff a city table at the Sept. 17 farmers market to promote the October Switch Your Trips campaign.
