Board moves forward on Pine Street paving; brick and granite orders placed

New Canaan — The Board of Selectmen approved contracts and material purchases on Sept. 16 to finish Pine Street from Grove to Park Street, including milling and repaving, brick sidewalks, and granite curbing.
Public Works awarded the paving contract to FGB Construction for $479,992.75 and added a 10% contingency of $48,000 for a total project authorization of $527,992.75. The work covers reclamation and repaving across the length of Pine Street, replaces or repairs granite curbing as needed, and installs brick sidewalks on both sides where planned. Staff said roughly half the street had previously been completed by private developers; this contract finishes the municipal portion and includes some repairs and new curbing.
Material purchases: The board separately approved purchasing approximately 18,000 bricks from Homer C. Godfrey at a unit price yielding $18,756.68 (including a modest contingency) and approved granite curbing purchases from William Stone for $39,267 (plus a small contingency). Public Works said some granite will be used on other projects as well and that the materials were available for prompt delivery.
Why it matters: The paving is part of the town's long‑running pavement management program; staff said Pine Street was the final road left in the program started in 2004 and that funds are available within the pavement management account. Staff indicated the goal is to complete work by Thanksgiving, with phased curbing, paving and sidewalk operations to reduce disruption.
Board action: The board approved the FGB paving contract and authorized the brick and granite purchases; the votes were unanimous.
Implementation: Construction sequencing will prioritize curbing, set pavement grades, complete paving, and finish sidewalks. Staff said lighting and lampposts could not be added within the constrained right‑of‑way at this time but could be considered with property owners as redevelopment occurs. Staff will provide maps and communications to merchants and the public before and during construction.
