Sheriff reports arrest of fugitive with firearm; county seeks IDOT review after fatal crash

At a Public Safety Committee meeting, the sheriff reported that deputies arrested a man who had fled from Dixon police and was later linked to a Chicago shooting. The sheriff said deputies found a firearm on the man when they took him into custody and that U.S. Marshals later apprehended him in Florida.
The sheriff told the committee, “he had a firearm on his person when they took him into custody,” and said federal authorities “were able to track him down in Florida.”
Committee members also discussed a separate, fatal traffic crash the sheriff reported “2 51 in Chicago Road.” The sheriff said he has contacted the Illinois Department of Transportation to see if IDOT can enhance safety at that intersection; he said an engineer told him IDOT was “contemplating a 4 way stop.”
Committee members asked about additional measures such as solar flashing signs. The sheriff relayed that IDOT staff said they already have a flashing sign at the location and that the agency does not typically post “dangerous intersection” signs because of liability concerns.
No formal motions or votes were taken on either the arrest update or the traffic safety review. The committee recorded the sheriff’s reports and indicated county staff would continue coordinating with IDOT and federal authorities as needed.
