Parent council meeting for students with disabilities draws community groups; board urges more outreach

The Parent Council for Students with Disabilities held its first meeting of the school year on Sept. 8 at Mount Pleasant Elementary and drew families and representatives from community partner groups, board members reported.
"There are about a half dozen families who were there, and we had a lot of representatives from the district as well," said Mr. Jordan, reporting to the board. Community organizations present included DFRC (Delaware Foundation Reaching Citizens), DVR (Division of Vocational Rehabilitation) and a new local group called Wolf Pups that provides small grants to families for assistive equipment.
Board members and council volunteers said outreach remains a challenge: some families did not know the meeting was taking place. The council and attending board members asked the district to promote future meetings more widely. The council also provides childcare during meetings to help parents attend; the next Parent Council meeting is scheduled for Nov. 10, 2025, at Mount Pleasant Elementary.
A board member also reported a volunteer—a retired special educator—has offered to serve on the council and attend meetings. Board members encouraged continued partnership with community disability organizations and asked staff to support promotion and accessibility so more families can participate.
