Resident urges action on speeding, homelessness and park upkeep at Fourth Street Park

A member of the public, former Mayor Joyce McIntyre of Douglas Street, spoke during the public‑comment period on Sept. 15 about public safety and park maintenance in Calamasa.
McIntyre told the council she was concerned about speeding on Douglas Street and called the stretch a "racetrack" that endangers pedestrians, saying a person walking a small dog was nearly struck. She also reported calls about people sleeping on grass near a church at Douglas and Avenue L and referenced a recent drive‑by shooting on California and Avenue L that she said contributed to her concern for more law enforcement presence.
McIntyre additionally raised concerns about Fourth Street Park, which she said was dedicated in Feb. 2015 and planted with rose bushes that she did not find on a recent visit. She described seeing a rundown motor home parked in the park and people in cars at about 10:00 a.m. She asked whether citizen patrols were still active and said she believed visible patrols are a use of taxpayer dollars that should be seen in the community.
The mayor and staff acknowledged the comments and encouraged McIntyre and other residents to work with staff on specific locations and times so staff and public safety partners can follow up.
