Chief reports officer absences and uptick in stolen vehicles, DUIs and speeding

Milton — Milton Police Chief Hernandez updated the council Monday on staffing and on what he described as an increase in certain crimes.
Hernandez told the council that Officer Haney is “still planning on being back in March,” and that Officer Wilcox will be out until October and will be reevaluated for return-to-duty options. “We're hoping to bring him at least light duty, but we're still looking at November to him returning to full duty status,” Hernandez said.
Hernandez also said the department has observed a rise in specific criminal activity: “We're also seeing an uptick in stolen cars again and DUIs and speeding. So keep your head on a swivel,” he said. In response to a council question about vehicle types, Hernandez noted that certain model pickups (F-150s) are among commonly stolen vehicles.
The comments were part of the department reports section of the council meeting; no formal action or policy change was proposed in response to the report during the meeting.
