Residents press council on Cityfest shooting, dispatch communications and traffic safety

Several O'Fallon residents used the Sept. 15 public-comment period to press the City Council for clearer information about a shooting at Cityfest and to raise traffic-safety concerns on Highway 50 merge lanes.

Tommy Yates, who said he lives in Ward 3, told the council he and his wife observed a heavy police presence during the Cityfest disturbance and that initial information from dispatch to callers indicated "nothing's happening" despite later confirmation of gunfire and arrests. "As a concerned citizen...can I get a better response than, 'well, nothing's really happening and everything under control?'" Yates asked.

Yates also complained about flow and safety at the merge lanes approaching Highway 50, describing drivers attempting unsafe merges and tailgating.

In a staff response, the police chief said the department issued a short press release at about 8:30 p.m. on the night of the incident noting a shooting investigation and that several juveniles and others were in custody. The chief said the department followed with a more detailed press release within two days and encouraged residents to follow the department's social media for timely information.

The chief acknowledged the situation was chaotic and apologized that residents did not receive the information they sought during the event. No changes to police dispatch policy or new directives were recorded at the meeting; council members encouraged ongoing communication between staff and residents.
