EPR committee outlines curriculum rewrites, new courses and elementary screeners

The district’s Education Programs & Resources committee reported curriculum development work and recommended several program changes during the Sept. 15 board meeting.
Presentations at the committee included a district professional-learning newsletter and a walkthrough data-collection tool intended to measure classroom engagement. Amy Polmounter, secondary curriculum director, described a four-stage approval process for the program of studies to give board members earlier visibility and an opportunity to provide feedback well before final adoption.
Curriculum actions under development include a full high-school English course rewrite (the last full rewrite was described as occurring around 2005), revisions to middle-school ELA, a rewrite of high‑school general science to align with standards, and a two-course sequence for personal finance (Personal Finance 1 in freshman year and Personal Finance 2 in junior year). The committee also flagged a ‘scoreboard/media’ course (referred to as Media 2/scoreboard class) for ongoing revision and the formal addition of Education for All/future educators programming.
The committee recommended procurement of several elementary assessment and instructional tools to support these initiatives: Acadience (elementary ELA screener), 3P Learning (math seeds), Reading Eggs (K–2 supplemental tool) and additional HMH materials for newly added elementary sections. Those materials were recommended to the finance committee and board for approval.
Committee members asked that the board and public attend upcoming EPR meetings to observe the program-of-studies process; the next EPR meeting was scheduled for Oct. 2.
