The Arlington City Council voted 4‑3 to approve its own Aug. 4 recommendation for the 2026 lodging‑tax (LTAC) distribution rather than the revised distribution the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee (LTAC) forwarded on Aug. 12.
City staff member Paul summarized the sequence: council had provided an August 4 recommendation to LTAC; LTAC met Aug. 12 and modified the distribution by reducing Hometown Holidays funding and increasing Skyfest funding, and then returned their recommendation to council. Council had three procedural options: accept LTAC’s Aug. 12 recommendation, approve council’s original Aug. 4 recommendation, or send the item back to LTAC for further work. A motion to approve council’s Aug. 4 recommendation was made and seconded.
Council debate was split. Members supporting the Aug. 4 recommendation said they had previously deliberated the numbers and preferred to proceed: “We have discussed this and voted on this a couple times already… I’m good with August 4,” one councilmember said. Members urging deference to LTAC cited fairness to the advisory committee and the consequences of shifting funding away from Skyfest, which several councilmembers described as the city’s largest event. Councilmember Jan said Skyfest draws about 15,000 people and provides the largest source of events‑related revenue: “The sky fest is the largest event in Arlington 15,000 people… If it wasn't here, there would not be the money to even distribute to the rest of these people.”
After discussion, council proceeded to a roll call and the motion to approve the Aug. 4 distribution passed 4‑3. Staff explained that any change other than accepting one of the two options would require restarting the LTAC review process. The council directed staff to implement the approved distribution.
