The Destin City Council approved funding, not to exceed $20,000, to repair cracks, level and recoating the Buck Destin Park basketball courts.
One council member introduced a motion to refurbish the courts following staff research. Staff reported an initial high estimate had been superseded by a vendor who previously repaired the city tennis courts and provided a price estimate of $16,843.03 to fill cracks, level surfaces and recoating. The staff caveat: a final site visit is required to finalize the scope and price and the contractor’s estimate could change slightly; council therefore approved a not-to-exceed figure of $20,000.
Funding source: council approved the expenditure from council’s FY2025 contingency, where limited funds remained; staff confirmed the remaining council contingency and city manager contingency balances and indicated October 1 starts a new fiscal year. Several council members emphasized the need to maintain recreational facilities promptly.
Staff will schedule the site visit to finalize scope and issue a purchase order within the contingency authorization; work will proceed after the site-visit price is confirmed and a contract issued.
“[...] filling the cracks, leveling, recoating, and then trying to refurbish that for only just under $17,000,” a staff summary said of the vendor estimate.
