GASTONIA, N.C. — The Gaston County Board of Education's operations committee reported project updates to the full board on Sept. 15, noting construction timelines and vendor selections for safety and facilities projects.

Assistant Superintendent Bessie Harvey told committee members work on the retaining wall at Seward Kramer High School began Sept. 1 and that the project has an expected completion date in February 2026. Harvey said alternate athletic schedules are being created to accommodate construction.
The committee also reported that Harris Communications has been selected to install an emergency responder radio coverage system in 28 schools; a contract for that work, along with contracts for trash removal and playground mulch, was placed on the board's consent agenda and approved during the Sept. 15 meeting.
Operations minutes noted ongoing cost pressures discussed at the Sept. 8 committee meeting, including rising health insurance and retirement costs at the state level and low-wealth funding issues for the district. The operations committee also previewed the district's strategic-plan draft and scheduled its next meeting for Oct. 6.
Board action: The consent agenda, which included the contracts discussed by the operations committee, passed unanimously at the Sept. 15 meeting. No additional motions specific to the projects were taken in open session beyond approval via the consent agenda.
