Council approves sidewalk replacement and ADA doors for municipal buildings

The Caribou City Council approved two municipal accessibility projects on Sept. 15: replacement of the sidewalk in front of City Hall and installation of ADA-compliant electric door openers at the wellness center and City Hall.

Public Works Director Chris Perkins described a quote from Willette Concrete to replace the front sidewalks with 4,000-pound concrete at about $10 per square foot and staged work to keep City Hall open. The Municipal Buildings Committee recommended the work be paid from the G1-370-05 curbing reserve account, which had a balance of $45,178.30. The council approved the scope and quoted cost from Willette Concrete and authorized payment from the curbing reserve account.

Gary Marquis reported that PDQ Doors and RL Todd and Sons provided quotes to install ADA electric door openers on both buildings. The council approved the scope and quotes for PDQ and RL Todd and Sons, to be paid from the municipal building reserve accounts (G1365-202 and G1-373-03). Each building9s opener package totals $5,500 and includes both sets of foyer doors and interior push-button controls. Electrical work quotes were $865 for the wellness center and $945 for City Hall.

Councilors noted the projects will improve access for voters and residents, and one councilor cited personal experience with family members in wheelchairs as part of their support. Staff said ordering and installation timelines anticipate equipment ordered within weeks and installations expected before late October if supply and scheduling permit.

Both motions passed by voice vote. Work will be scheduled by staff and contractors and charged to the identified reserve accounts.
