On Sept. 15, 2025, the City of Tuscaloosa Planning and Zoning Commission voted to recommend annexation of a 0.7‑acre parcel at 6950 University Boulevard East and to approve a rezoning from the city’s default single‑family residential zoning to GC (General Commercial). The property currently contains a convenience store and fuel station in the Cottondale area.
The petitioner, identified in the record as Danish Sudan of Old Gold Run, told the commission that the business currently uses a septic system but would prefer to be annexed so it can connect to city sewer if utilities become available in the future and to streamline accounting and tax administration with the owner’s other city‑located business.
Planning staff said the property is in the city’s primary expansion area and that the requested zoning to GC conforms to the Comprehensive Plan’s Corridor Commercial designation. Staff did not receive public comment on the annexation or rezoning. Michael Garner, city engineer, noted that sewer may not be immediately available at the site but said annexation would allow the property to connect if the city extends sewer service later.
Counsel and staff also confirmed that the commission’s action on annexation is a recommendation to the city council, and the council will take the final annexation vote. The motion to recommend annexation and approve rezoning carried unanimously at the commission meeting. The commission also noted the petitioner had obtained a city alcohol license referenced during the discussion.
Next steps: the annexation recommendation and the zoning recommendation will go forward to the City Council for final action on annexation; zoning recommendations typically follow annexation as part of the council process.
