Committee proposes distribution of diabetes fact sheet for elementary and sixth-grade students

The committee recommended adding a requirement that the superintendent annually distribute the diabetes-management policy and make a Type 1 diabetes fact sheet available to parents at enrollment and upon entry to sixth grade.
The Policy Review Committee considered revisions to Policy 209.2, Diabetes Management, at its Sept. 15 meeting that would require the superintendent to annually distribute the policy and related materials to staff, students and parents or guardians. Under the draft, the district must make the Type 1 diabetes fact sheet developed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health available to parents or guardians when a child is first enrolled in elementary school and again upon their child's entry into sixth grade. The policy permits distribution in writing, electronically or on the school-district publicly accessible website. Committee members confirmed the fact sheet will be included in enrollment and sixth-grade packets and directed that the revised policy be posted for public review; the board will consider action in October.
