Policy Review Committee proposes revisions to academic standards policy

The Policy Review Committee met Sept. 15 and reviewed proposed revisions to Policy 102, Academic Standards, seeking to clarify which content areas students are expected to attain and how those areas are defined. The committee said the draft defines English language arts as reading, writing, speaking and listening, and replaces the prior “science technology” language with explicit references to science, environment, ecology, technology and engineering across specified grade spans. Committee Chair stated the revisions are intended as cleanups to codify what students should attain in core content areas. Committee members identified the changes as recommendations from PSBA. Dr. Bukowski, a district staff member who spoke about related items, confirmed the edits align with outside guidance and with the district’s current review process. Committee members did not take final action on Policy 102 during the substantive discussion; instead the committee later voted to authorize posting the revised policies, including Policy 102, for public review in September with possible board action in October. The proposed wording and the full redline will be posted for public review per the committee’s motion; the board will consider formal adoption at a later meeting.
