Chief Gibbons told the Safety Board that Zionsville’s EMS competition team was invited to represent the United States at an international prehospital competition in Abu Dhabi after success at FDIC. Two firefighters, Dooley and Anchor, who had valid passports, will travel for the preliminaries on Oct. 6 with possible finals on Oct. 8. "Firefighters Dooley and Anchor are gonna be heading to Abu Dhabi ... They compete in preliminaries on October 6, and then if they make it to the finals, that'll be on October 8," Gibbons said. Gibbons said the invitation followed the team’s performance at national events and that the trip is "all expenses paid" and will not cost the fire department. He also noted other international teams were expected to attend, including squads from Ireland, Australia and Canada. The board applauded the selection and several members offered to help document the trip; department leaders said no formal board action was required because the trip is privately coordinated and funded through the competition organizers. Why it matters: the invitation reflects recognition of Zionsville’s EMS training and provides a professional-development opportunity for the involved firefighters; the department said participation will not impose expenses on municipal budgets.
