OKCPS rescinds contract with Oklahoma Public Montessori initiative after school could not secure facility

The Oklahoma City Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously Sept. 15 to rescind and release a charter contract with the Oklahoma Public Montessori initiative after the charter operator failed to secure a facility for the 2025–26 school year.
Tony Childers, the district’s general counsel, told the board the district had worked with the charter organizer to try to get the school open for 2025–26, but the operator “was unable to do that” because of difficulties finding a facility and “some other difficulties that they came across.” Childers said the district and the charter school agreed to a mutual rescission so that formal revocation would not be necessary.
Childers also said the decision allowed the district to provide additional classrooms at Horace Mann, where the district added two new, fully enrolled classrooms.
The motion to rescind and release the contract passed 7–0.
Background provided at the meeting indicated the matter had been discussed with the board in June and that the charter operator waived its option to return within a 60‑day period discussed earlier with the board.
The board took no disciplinary action; the parties executed a mutual agreement to end the contract so the district could reallocate classroom space.
