Inspectors deem house near sports complex unsalvageable; commissioners ask for demolition cost and parking study

County parks staff reported Sept. 15 that an older house next to the Decatur County Sports Complex is likely not salvageable after an inspection by county staff and a building inspector. Staff said the home would be difficult and expensive to make usable.
Commissioners and parks staff discussed removing the house and some trees to create additional parking for the complex. A staff aerial review suggested removing the house and clearing trees could yield roughly 30 or more parking spaces; commissioners asked staff to preserve as much greenery as practical if demolition proceeds.
Parks staff said they will get a demolition quote and return with cost estimates and a site plan for additional parking. No formal demolition motion or contract award was made at the Sept. 15 meeting; the action recorded was a direction to obtain quotes and proposals for commissioners’ consideration.
