Decatur County to open bids Sept. 26 for more than 60 miles of chip-seal work

Decatur County commissioners on Sept. 15 approved a special session to open bids for roadwork that county staff said will add a little more than 60 miles of chip-and-seal and related asphalt work. The commissioners set a special meeting for Sept. 26 at 2:30 p.m. to open proposals.
The county’s highway foreman, Todd Hout, told the commissioners the county will bid out the oil used for chip-and-seal work and is required to get “3 quotes from 3 different manufacturers.” Hout said the county will supply stone, trucking and coordination with the contractor while contractors provide the oil and application.
County staff said the work is outside the county’s current CCMG grant and that officials want an expedited schedule to complete work before winter weather curtails operations. Commissioners asked staff to track crew hours on this and similar projects to compare in-house versus contracted costs for future planning.
The bid solicitation will be advertised; Hout said bids will be opened at the special session on Sept. 26. No dollar totals or contractor selections were announced at the meeting.
Next steps: staff will issue the bid request, accept proposals, and present results at the Sept. 26 special session for commission action.
