Sheriff outlines plan to repurpose 28 patrol body cameras for jail staff, cloud storage approved

Sheriff C.J. Baugh told the Cobb County legislative body that the sheriff's office plans to repurpose 28 patrol body cameras for use by jail staff and to store footage in a cloud account, and the body approved the procurement under a Sourcewell cooperative contract. "It's about 5 years old," Baugh said of the existing system the office uses and explained the decision to rotate older patrol devices into the jail so jailers have improved visibility of activity inside the facility. Baugh said the cloud storage will automatically receive recordings when an officer docks a device. The sheriff characterized the chosen system as more cost‑efficient than Axon for the county's budget. The purchase and reimplementation will be paid from the sheriff's office budget over a five‑year lifecycle, Baugh said. Commissioners moved and approved the measure (mover listed on the record as Billy Hudson with a second by a commissioner recorded as Miss Glaser); a subsequent roll call on the item recorded affirmative votes and the clerk noted that the motion carried. The procurement will use Sourcewell pricing and does not require a separate competitive bid under that cooperative contract, the sheriff said. Baugh also told the body the department plans future replacements on a rolling three‑year schedule for the set of 28 cameras. The approved action covers purchase and implementation of the cloud account and device re‑assignment; the sheriff's office will manage training, deployment and the cloud subscription moving forward.
