Vice Mayor Hess, chairing the commission’s city‑manager search subcommittee, reported that 45 applicants had applied to be Kalamazoo’s next city manager and that consultants from Raftelis are vetting candidates.
The subcommittee’s timeline calls for the search consultant to present a vetted top 10 to commissioners; a committee‑of‑the‑whole meeting is scheduled for Oct. 6 to review the list and select between three and five finalists for interviews. A public meet‑and‑greet with finalists is set for Oct. 14 at Catalyst Center (180 Water St.), interviews are planned for Oct. 15, and the commission will meet Oct. 20 to decide.
Pamela Weidman of Raftelis will screen candidates and will contact finalists before the names are publicly released. Commissioners discussed whether to pick three, four or five finalists; the consultant recommended three to five, and the commission agreed to target up to five with the option to name alternates if finalists withdraw.
Attorney Aaron Liao noted finalists sometimes withdraw, and commissioners said they will review candidate materials in the attorney’s office and may ask for additional names if the first round does not produce a satisfactory finalist. The update was informational; no formal appointment was made at the meeting.
