GAHANNA, Ohio — The Gahanna Division of Police expanded its ranks and leadership at the Sept. 15 City Council meeting, when the mayor administered oaths to a new patrol officer and to Ethan Moffitt, who was promoted to deputy chief.
The promotion and swearing-in: Mayor Jagwin administered the oath to Bryson Williams, a new officer who joined the division from Las Vegas Metro Police, and later administered the oath promoting Lieutenant Ethan Moffitt to deputy chief. Director Becker and Chief Spence spoke in support of both officers during the ceremony.
Nut graf: City leaders said the additions strengthen the department’s capacity for front-line policing and leadership succession. Officials described the promotion as the result of a year-long planning process and credited lengthy service and training in Moffitt’s career.
Details: Director Becker told the council the dual actions reflect departmental growth: “We’re putting a tremendous leader, advancing his career, creating upward opportunities for everybody else in the agency,” he said, and emphasized the importance of officer ranks for public safety. Chief Spence highlighted Moffitt’s 27 years of service to Gahanna and praised his record of community engagement and mentorship.
Deputy Chief Moffitt addressed the chamber after the oath, saying, “You do all the hard work. You make it easy to be in my spot. And I’ll commit to you that I’m gonna come in every day and endeavor to be the type of deputy chief that you all deserve.”
Why it matters: City leaders framed the promotions as part of succession planning and efforts to retain and develop personnel. Officials noted that adding a second deputy chief position was proposed about a year earlier and that promotional and hiring processes were completed with council support.
What’s next: Council and staff did not announce operational or budget changes tied to these promotions at the meeting. The division will continue regular operations under the new leadership structure.
