At its regular meeting, the Alief Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to nominate Trustee Anne Williams to appear on the unified ballot for two Harris County Appraisal District (HCAD) board seats that expire in December. The board also approved a resolution to submit the nomination to HCAD.
District staff explained the nomination process to the trustees, noting that Alief ISD controls 30 votes in the HCAD balloting process and that nominations are due Oct. 15. The board may nominate one person, two people, or none; after HCAD compiles nominations into a unified ballot, each taxing entity casts its weighted votes for the open seats.
Trustee Patrick moved to make a single nomination; Trustee Janet Spurlock seconded. Trustee Patrick formally nominated Trustee Anne Williams; no other nominations were made. The board voted 5-0 to select Williams and later voted 5-0 to approve a resolution placing her name on the HCAD ballot.
District staff clarified eligibility rules discussed during the meeting: an employee of a taxing unit may serve on the HCAD board if the employee is also an elected member of that taxing unit’s governing body; because Williams is an elected trustee, staff said she is eligible to serve. The administration will work with Trustee Williams to complete required paperwork for submission to HCAD.
