The Newark City Council referred several proposed zoning changes to the planning commission and held others for future action, and heard a public request from a local business seeking a zoning change.
During the meeting the council read multiple ordinances proposing changes to zoning classifications for properties across the city. Ordinance 25-28 would change a district from single-family residence (RH) to multifamily residence (MFR); 25-29 would reclassify property at 2205 Cherry Valley Road from Church/School/Institutional (CSI) to General Business (GB); 25-30 proposes changing 60 Prospect Street from single-family (RH) to High Intensity Business (HB); and 25-31 concerns reclassifying 274 North Seager Street from Limited Commercial (LC) to Multifamily Residence (MFR). The council referred those measures to the planning commission or held them for the next meeting, as appropriate, for further review.
In public comments earlier in the meeting, John Gordon, representing Inglefield Oil Company, told the council the company operates seven Duchess stores in the county and requested a zoning change to permit construction of an eighth store. Gordon said he had spoken with a city employee, George Carter, who recommended changing the property's zoning to General Business. The council did not take immediate action on Gordon’s request; the formal rezoning petitions introduced during the meeting were processed through referral to the planning commission per council practice.
At least one of the rezoning measures (25-29 for 2205 Cherry Valley Road) was specifically mentioned later in council remarks as relevant to possible new commercial development on Cherry Valley Road. The council did not vote to adopt any zoning changes at the meeting; the measures were referred for further review and public hearing by the planning commission where applicable.
