The Logansport Board of Zoning Appeals on Sept. 15 approved a variance permitting a six-foot privacy fence within the front-yard setback at 231 Grove Street.
The petitioner, Elizabeth Barnett, asked the board to allow the taller fence and to locate it close to the sidewalk along a corner lot she said has limited yard space and contains a pool. The board’s planning staff described the request as relief from the R‑3 district standard, which limits fences in front-yard setbacks to 48 inches and requires a 20-foot front-yard setback; staff said the petitioner needs roughly a 10–11 foot variance from the building setback and a two-foot height variance from the fence standard.
The item drew limited discussion. Barnett told the board the proposed fence would not block sightlines for turning and would improve the look and privacy of the property. Planning staff recommended conditions including that the petitioner meet all remaining ordinance standards and obtain any applicable state and local permits. The board’s secretary read three specific conditions before the vote: that the petitioner’s proposals be treated as conditions of approval, that all other ordinance standards be met, and that required state and local permits be obtained with proof provided to the zoning administrator.
After the board closed discussion, members voted to approve the variance with the stated conditions. The chair told Barnett the zoning administrator would send a written notice of the decision and reminded her of the 30‑day appeal period to circuit court.
The approval is limited to the relief requested and the conditions the board recorded at the hearing. The petitioner agreed at the meeting to abide by those conditions.
For next steps, the zoning administrator will issue the formal decision letter and the petitioner must present required permits and satisfy any remaining ordinance standards to implement the fence.
