The Historic Preservation Commission on Sept. 16 approved an application to remove and replace the front steps at 610 Tenth Street South in the Hawthorne neighborhood. Chelsea Lieverson, planner with the Department of Planning and Development, presented the application and staff materials.
The house is listed in city records as a Sears Roebuck model built in 1932 with an architectural style recorded as Tudor/English cottage. "We received an application for a project to remove and replace the front steps of a home within the Chaz A. Roberts Historic Overlay District," Chelsea Lieverson said during her presentation.
Staff reported the existing concrete steps have settled and are cracked and broken; the applicant proposes composite decking in the color "mesa" and a black metal railing. The applicant says the composite decking will provide better traction and reduce standing water on the steps to assist the homeowner’s mobility. Staff included in the packet photo examples of similar projects in the neighborhood and notes from review.
Clint of Minion Construction and the homeowner were present at the meeting. A motion "to approve the application as submitted" was made and seconded, and the commission voted to approve the application.
The project has a building permit on file and will require final review by the inspections department before work proceeds, the commission noted. No conditions or appeals were recorded in the meeting record.
